Upper wing and other details

I spent the afternoon working on extending the right rear spar on the upper wing. I was able to finish cutting the scarf on the spar and laid out the extensions on the new spar stock. I'll rough those out on the bandsaw before working on the final fit later this week. Hopefully, it will be glued up during the next hangar session. Dad was working on rivet holes and countersinking for the sheet metal on the fuselage. All of the sheet metal screws are getting replaced by machine screws and nutplates. No more stripped or loose sheet metal screws!

Earlier this week I got the outline of the upper rib template made. I need to route out the lightening holes and spar slots next. Then I can knock out the six new ribs needed for the upper wing tip extensions. I didn't remember to take any pictures, but I'll get them on the next trip to the hangar.

How far are you extending the wing spars, and why? I have an S-1C and would like to square the tips as well.....

Sorry for the late reply. I don't get too many comments and sometimes miss them.

I'm keeping the span the same on the top and bottom. Since the spars were tapered for the round tip, they had to be extended out to the original span at their full depth. Some guys clip the span a bit when they square up the tips. Some will take it all the way in to the first full size rib. That makes the roll faster, but the wing loading goes up.

By squaring mine off at full span, I get quite a bit of wing area added. This will slow the stall speed a bit and improve cornering a bit. Nothing radical, but should be noticeable. With the new ailerons, the roll rate will still be a huge improvement over the stock setup.
